As a lifelong musician, sound has always been a source of limitless curiosity in my life. This project is my first attempt at exploring the creative space between two of my passions: photography and field recording. My goal was to produce photos with a strong connection to a particular soundscape, and supplemental field recordings are intended to be observed alongside each respective image. This combination of media has the effect of further immersing the viewer in the setting. The images, on their own, are minimalist and elemental by nature.
As I pursued this project, I found that the photos I was capturing each spoke to a meaningful aspect of my identity and I found the project to be profoundly autobiographical in a way. The train which repeatedly passed my partner and I’s first apartment, the perpetual rumble of beaver dams which represent my field work as an environmental scientist, the mechanical sound of a bicycle freewheel, etc. These are the settings, and sounds, that characterize my life.
